Bookkeeping tips for Fort Wayne small business owners
Our firm partners with three hundred small businesses; most of these businesses are located within a one hour drive of Fort Wayne, Indiana. We provide bookkeeping services for some of these clients; however, many of our clients do their own bookkeeping.
Accurate bookkeeping is absolutely critical to the success of your small business. A business cannot be successful unless it knows how much money it has earned and what its expenses are. Our firm employs three Certified Public Accountants and all three have a great deal of experience handling small business bookkeeping. All of our clients partner with one specific CPA in our firm; this allows our CPA’s to learn a great deal about the small businesses they partner with!
Bookkeeping tips from our CPA’s:
- Do your bookkeeping on a regular schedule. It is far easier to ensure your bookkeeping is accurate when you do it on a weekly or monthly schedule. It is a bad idea to try to do your bookkeeping by throwing all of your receipts into a “shoe box” and spending a couple of days trying to figure out what happened over the prior year.
- Do not assume that your spouse wants to handle the bookkeeping for your small business. If I had a dollar for every client I have (especially men) that “dumped” their bookkeeping on their spouse and hoped for the best; I could take a nice vacation! Bookkeeping is important and it is not something that everyone “has a knack” for; nor is it something that everyone is willing to do in the first place.
- Partner with a CPA who can answer your bookkeeping questions throughout the year. It is far easier to ensure your bookkeeping is accurate and up-to-date if you have a professional that you can call who can answer your bookkeeping questions.
- Use a bookkeeping system that makes sense for you based on your needs. The majority of our clients use QuickBooks; however, a fair numbers use an excel spreadsheet and a few do it the old fashioned way with pen and paper. All three work and you should use the method you are most comfortable with.
